Horned Locust GoatScaping

santa fe goatscaping

Goats have long been used to clear land in preperation for planting gardens, pastures, orchards etc, to weed and balance through the growing season and also to clean up after the harvest to prepare the soil to sit during winter. Benefits of utilizing the managed goatherd in these ways are many. During the Industrial Revolution many practices that had gone on without much notice were ended. Herds used to roam throughout towns and through fields after harvest keeping the land and vegetation young and healthy. Weeds were few and fertility was great. As mono cropping became fashionable the land suffered not only from the lack of direct animal input and stimulation, but also from the herbicides that slowly came to be relyed upon. Today herbicide and pesticide use has gone rampant and is in all corners of the society. GoatScaping has become a revolutionary new implementation of old ideas. Since we have started in 2007 many other companies have popped up across the nation and have also been featured on local radio, NPR reports and TV and Newspapers and Magazines everywhere.

We started out doing medium-large sized projects with 250 goats working 95 acres along the Galisteo River. Budget cuts and drought have down sized the projects and the herd has followed. We have learned the art of Yard GoatScaping. It has been great to watch the change in our client's yards. Traditionally overrun leechfields have begun to transition to grasses and forbes even without any extra seeding.

We set up temporary electric net- fencing to contain the herd and to keep them from any landscaping or parts of the house that they should be kept from. We arrive and stay onsite until the job is done, aided by Australian Shepherd herding dogs and a Maremma Sheepdog Guardian. Larger projects which have no immediate neighbors can be done with dogs on horseback, without fencing for a lower cost per day.
